Beryllium Copper Coil

Austral Wright Metals has a history of over 75 years in the beryllium copper coil business as one of the industry’s leading suppliers.

The superior qualities of copper, copper alloy and beryllium alloy make them the ideal products in a vast range of commercial, industrial and domestic applications.

Beryllium alloys are well known for it’s traditional properties – high conductivity, being electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability and resistance to corrosion – however beryllium copper is far more versatile in combining with other metals to provide performance characteristics needed to satisfy today’s increasingly complex demands. But there is much more to this alloy.

Customers can request products to be produced to their individual specifications, or select from Austral Wright Metals’ extensive stocks of copper and copper alloy sheet, coil and extrusions.

If you need beryllium coil for your next project, please get in touch with us via our contact form or call us on Sydney 02 9827 0790.

Beryllium copper

Beryllium copper is an age-hardenable alloy

Beryllium copper is a unique copper alloy in that is it one of only a few classes of coppers that can be age-hardened. The age-hardening of beryllium copper will accent the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness or electrical conductivity singly or in one of many possible combinations.

Before ageing beryllium alloys they are remarkably easy to form. But, only proper aging imparts the desired properties for top performance. To achieve these properties you must follow strict time and temperature heat treatment cycles. Contact Austral Wright Metals for technical assistance on these heat treatment practices and time/temperature curves.

The strength of beryllium copper is about twice that of other copper alloys. At the same time, beryllium copper alloy has high thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity, excellent processing performance, non-magnetic, and no sparks when impacted.

Popular alloys

Beryllium copper gains it’s unqiue properties from the additional of around 2% Beryllium. The four most common beryllium copper alloys are; C17200, C17510, C17530 and C17500. Beryllium copper alloy C17200 is the most readily available of the beryllium copper alloys.

Applications

Given it’s versatility, beryllium copper has a vast array of applications. Although it’s use is becoming less common. Some of the most common applications are:

  • switches, reeds, contacts, bellows, diaphragms in the electronics and instrument industries
  • bearings
  • non-sparking tools
  • moulds
  • welding electrodes and tips
